I am in need of replacing the sound blanket on the cover of my motor. Mine is old and falling apart, and leaves lil yellow dust bunnies everywhere. I dont run it with the cover on in fear of sucking up that stuff into the carbs.

I would like to replace it, I am going to rip it all out, so I can use the cover when I finally get out on the lake this thursday.

What can I use to replace this. Does it have to be fire proof?

I'm not sure they're all that effective in those old V-4s anyhow. Just remove it and go.

Ditto. The worst that will happen is it'll be louder running, maybe. But you're right in removing it. Back in the day we saw that happen on a boat we were setting up. Pieces of the blanket got in the carbs and we had to rebuild them.

Unfortunately it was a V8 - lots of carbs. Further bummer was that it was a tripple engine boat.

Yeah, when I rebuilt the carbs there was these lil pieces of stuff that I could only guess was the sound blanket that had worked its way into the insides of the carb.

I have never run it wih hood on for that reason. As I dont feel like rebuilding them again. lol

I guess I was just hoping that I could use something as those old v4s are loud as you know what. I was hoping wih the cover on and some new sound blanket I might not have to yell as loud to my friends on the boat!

Maybe I can find a newer engine cover and steal the sound blanket off of that.

I know the slogan back then was if it's quieter than an evinrude, then it aint running. If my evinrude is quite I dont wanna know what loud is! lol

I agree with just removing it and going, but could he not install some dynamat or similar product if he wanted to dull the sound some? The stuff that is used in car audio applications to reduce exterior noise. I'm not sure I'd use Dynamat per say but some similar product may work as long as it would stand up to the heat.

The coating does nothing for the motor's operation and provides almost no sound enhancement. It is not fireproof and never was.

A couple of single edged razor blades and you never have to worry about it again.

I'm a stickler for a noisy engine. When I'm cruising along only thing I like to hear is the water.
I've made the insulation by cutting 6 inch fiberglass insulation... smashing it flat....then setting it inside a garbage bag cut to approximately the same size. Get it shapped like you want, add lots of duck tape or packing tape to make the out edge more durable.. Glue into place with whatever ( i used high temp hot glue) and you're done.

I like the dynomat Idea. I have some left over from when I installed it on my rx7. I do not know if I have enough to cover the whole cowl.

I like the idea from outboardnut, but I cant quite figure out how he made that work. I guess i need to see a picture Im a picture type of guy.

i could rip most of it out by hand I just need to get in there with a razor and get the rest out.

I used Urethane foam sheeting applied with glue. Really worked great. It's flexible, waterproof, won't rot and is uneffected by heat. The stuff I have is 1/2 and 5/8 thick.

Where did you get it? Can you just pick up a sheet of it at your local home depot?

Re: Replacing the sound blanket

Probably not......this stuff came from a local company that makes the foam and stamps it into all sorts of shapes for automotive, and industrial applications. I insulated my entire van with it and boy did it make a difference in the sound levels.
