I am replacing the transom and need a short shaft motor. I was wondering if i could just make the new transom 5 or 6" higher and do some modification to the top to make it look ok? It would save me 150.00 or should i just stick to my original plan of the short drive shaft?

I highly recommend sticking to the short shaft. At higher speeds, the boat will handle squirrelly which would be less then safe.

The only difference I see is your center of gravity would be a little higher. Would that effect a small boat like that?

The center of gravity would be MORE apparent in a small boat like that. It is short and fairly narrow for it's size, so keeping that big powerhead lower to the boat is a good thing. Don't want it to become more topheavy than need be... Keep it short shaft - those parts are MUCH easier to find and change over than it would be to modify the boat to take the long shaft...

Also, where did you get the $150 quote for converting the motor to short shaft? I've bought complete motors for a lot less than that! When you get around to taking the unit off, send me a PM and I'll see if I can find the right shaft for your motor. I've got several Big Twin style short drive shafts in the shop, but there are some subtle differences. That and the short shift rod connector should be the only parts you need to purchase (which I think I also have...)

The 150.00 is what they run from evinrude website. I can pull the lower unit when ever and give you any info about the old parts. I am going to stick to my original plan and the transom thats in it now was only about 2.5 feet wide im going the full width of the boat at 1.5" but i'll keep the same height. I was just going to cut 5" off the shift rod. Thanks for the imput. Chinewalker let me know what you need to know to see if you have the parts i need.
