Replacing the wooden berths / carpeting on my trailer??

Hi all -

New to this side fo the forum. I am going to replace my (2) 2x4 berths (quasi jet ski trailer) with 2x6's (maybe 2x8's) to obtain some added clearance for my boat hull and trailer.

What kind of carpeting should I use? Is this just normal indoor / outdoor stuff?? I don't mind having to repalce it every few years vs. spending an arm and a leg for "heavy duty" stuff.

For wood - wolvanized 2x6 (or 8) cut to size.

Thought of adding rollers - it's a light boat and the hull has specific "grooves" for the berth to sit.

Thanks in advance.

I used Lowes outdoor carpet. Maybe not the best, but waaaay cheaper than actual "bunk" carpet from marine stores and a few friends in town suggested it. looks great, and was easy to work with. about $6 for a 1'x12' piece, cant beat it i dont think.

Having changed out the bunks and carpet on four different trailers, I echo the indoor/outdoor from Lowes or HD. Make sure it has the rubber, not cloth backing and use a lite amount of waterproof glue, also available at Lowes or HD. One thing not mentioned, I secure the carpet on the underside of the bunks with stainless steel staples. Use at least half inch staples and then come behind the staple gun and take a hammer and tap them in firmly. This should last you several 4-6 years. Using quality pressure treated runner will last the life of the trailer.

If it's for a jet ski treated wood is ok, but if it's a metal hull the treated wood will leach through the carpet and cause corrosion.

Is treated OK for fiberglass hulls? No staining issues or anything? I need to replace my warped bunks with torn carpet soon.

I agree, i also glued mine down and stapled it from the underside. I used the old boards, they were fine, curved a little to match the hull but still good.

OK, so if it is an aluminum boat, what do I use? My non-treated bunks and guide-ons are rotted and splintered under the carpet. I know the old wolmanized was not an issue. Supposedly, there is a new treatment that won't give me any problems, but what is it, and how do I know for sure?

Thanks,

For P/T wood you need special hardware, it will corrode the staples and ordinary hardware like crazy.

I will be replacing my bunks and will treat them with a product like Thompson's water seal and put the slip glides on from the old bunks and won't be using any carpeting.

what about using cedar? that should last just as long as pressure treated and it doesn't have any chemicals.
