1985 115hp Johnson. Only have owned for a year. Keep reading post on adding temp. gage. Dose it make sense to replace thermostats first. My kit cost the same as the Gage kit. While I have it apart should I flush it out with water or a cleaner?

Re: Replacing Thermostat

Which gauge is better depends on your goal.

The water pressure gauge can never tell you if the engine is overheating, if the water is passing through the engine cooling passages properly, or, if the thermostat is functioning. It can give you an early warning if your water pump is weakening, which is very important.

The temperature gauge can give you a way of monitoring the actual temperature of the cylinder heads so that you know in advance that something has changed, rather than wait until the temperature switch sounds the horn. When the horn sounds, some damage is probably already done.

Everything that you normally need to rebuild the thermostat system is included in the kit found here: http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=111072&gd_row=49&**********=029868790

Re: Replacing Thermostat

Thank you for your help. should I flush out the passages while I have the thermostat apart and should I use a chemical flush?

Re: Replacing Thermostat

If a 1985 115 is a looper like my 1985 140 that is not the correct thermostat parts kit. That kit is for a crossflow motor.

Hope that helps

Depends on what you find, but with the crossflow V4 the water has already gone through the engine before it reaches the thermostat, so a flush from the thermostat housing won't do much good. It's better to flush from the water intake on a routine basis.

1985 V4 loopers were 120HP and 140HP.

Ok.I wasn't sure if the 115 were loopers.

Thanks Shawn

115 loopers don't come into being until the 1990's 60? models.

Re: Replacing Thermostat

Hit the Search function at the top of the page and look for posts on how to remove and install the thermostats. It can be a real bear. I have a pair of 1987 110 hp crossflows.

The 85 115 is a bubbleback crossflow engine. Solittle's comment applies to your engine.
