Re: Replacing Transom

I am in the process of replacing the transom in my 86 Skeeter 18' boat. I wanted to start a thread and post pictures as I go to help other who may need to do the same thing. The problem is I cannot figure out how to post pictures. Can anyone help?

I already have some pictures on a floppy.
As far as the transom project goes, I have the complete top cap removed and out the way. My next step will be cutting out the old transom.

Re: Replacing Transom

You need to place the pictures on a web site that you can link to in your messages here. I don't use these, but I know there is photos.msn.com. Others here may have better suggestions.

Good luck,
BL...

Saperry,
If ChainSaw Evin was here, he would tell you ta get after that old wood with a chain saw. The saw really only wants to chew up the wood and not the fiberglass, so if you're careful, you can have that old wood out of there in no time.
Just ask Evin.

c/6

Hooty

Saperry,

i'm still working on my web site to educate boaters with pictures how to fix boat & OB/I/O. until that is done, I've used this website and then posted pictures there. its free but you have a max of 28 pics. you can always sign up again and keep on posting.

www.picturetrail.com

you can do a search of some of my albums --- look for wellcraft, 79gradywhite, larson. if you have any problems or quest. ....just holla back here. i'll find out some more web sites this afternoon for u.

good luck.

i might be also needing to replace a transom, your information would be priceless and very needed.

thanks!

Re: Replacing Transom

I have my own server and can host images for you..

I was planning on an upload facility, so you could upload them yourself, but if I posted any info on that here, I'd end up with people stealing bandwidth.. however, if you email me the images, I will put them online and send you the location url's which you insert in the "image" box that comes up when pushing the image button while posting.

However, an easier answer might be to check out your own ISP. if you have a dialup account or broadband, ususally your isp gives you an allocation of web space on their server, so its possible you have one and have never used it.

regards

Frank

rgds

frank

Re: Replacing Transom

I now have the old transom and floor removed and most of the stringers(they were rottrn also. I have some pictures I will try to post later today at picture trial.com.

I had always heard Skeeter was one of the better boats but the lousey workmanship that went into building this one is amazing. Many of the floor seams were not fiberglassed, the foam was not completly filled into the floor compartments, to much exposed wood in the floor and srtingers, etc.

Any way I shoul have some pic's later today.

Thanks for all the help.

Try this for saperry's page.

Your transom/floor work looks alot like mine. I'm going to use seacast to replace the transom....but I'm not sure about the stringers. I don't know if the seacast will hold screws well enough.

Re: Replacing Transom

From what I read when researching seacast, I think it would hold screws at least as well as wood, if not better.

remember its basically recycled fiberglass chunks with a special resin..

fiberglass that thick would hold very well.

rgds

Frank

PS, don't forget the photos, I'm interested. :)

Will do Frank. I have a meeting tonight regarding a proposed bypass (read highway around) my small town. After that I'll scan and email.

Re: Replacing Transom

I have looked at seacast and I am NOT sold on it
It may be a great product and do the job fine but I cannot afford to roll the dice. It woud cost over $350.00 to do my transom alone. Then I still need wood and fiber glass for the floor. I can buy enough wood and glass to do both for about $250.00. If I pour $350.00 worth of seacast and it does not take I will have to dig/chisel/grind all the seacast out and still go buy the wood and glass. Not to mention a trip to Ga. to put my foot in some at Seacasts' A#%. The boat I am doing is already 16 years old. If I build a wood transom and take care of it it will last untill the boat is worth almost nothing in any condition.
That is my logic for not using Seacast...for what it is worth. If I could by the stuff locally and not pay annother 40-60 bucks shipping on top of the price, maybe. If I saw a boat that had it done and it worked out great, probably.
I KNOW a wooden transom will work and I am conifident that I can build one.

****Good Wood Properly Used Has Never Failed*****

That was a sign at an old Mom & Pop lumber yard near home when I was a kid. Ofcourse Home Depot put them out of buissness so what does that prove.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the help with the link outonbizniz
Maybe someday you can show me how to do that.

Sean

Re: Replacing Transom

sape, I have a few questions, first question is was this boat sunk?...or left outdoors?...how did it get so rotten, question # 2 how did you discover the boat was rotton?....soft floor?...taking water?...question # 3 after you removed the floor, was the foam saturated?....was it heavy and soaked with water?....would it float or help the boat sink?...good lick with your project

Re: Replacing Transom

I have only had the boat since november so I don't know the history. I got it as a bank repo.
I do not think it was sunk only left outdorrs uncovered. What is suprising is the carpet and the outside fiberglas is in good shape.
Yes the floor was soft and I knew it neded to be replced.
I was told by a local boat repair shop that "the transom had no wood left in it" I thought he was overstating that the boat needed a transom. He was not. After I removed the inside layer of fiberglasss the transom came out in hand fulls of damp ragged slop. He wanted $3500.00-4000.00 dollars to replace the transom and floor. I told him for that much I would do it myself. His reply was that I would not be able to....
I hate it when people tell me that. It usually leads to a long quest to prove them wrong.

The foam was damp in spots but not saturated completely. Water is still comming out of the floor in spots. I think the foam would have helped it float. From what I understand it really does not help unless the boat is already trying to sink. It gives you reserve boyancy to keep the baot floating even swamped and full of water. The foam is so dense it will not soak up water only the pores can hold water. So the volume of the foam gives you boyancy.

I am trying to decide how to replace it.
Any Ideas?

Re: Replacing Transom

if you have to replace the floor anyway...I'd use the two part mix foam that can be purchased many places. I used Hamilton Marine (just because it's close to me). I'd imagine westmarine has it as well.

Re: Replacing Transom

Is is against the law to rebuild a boat and leave out the floatation? Does the coast guard require it on rebuilds or home builds? Who out there has ever swamped a boat? I think the floation trapped water and caused the innards of my boat to deteroriate and create a dangerous condition, and I am debating whether or not to put the stuff back in there.

Re: Replacing Transom

I am going to get good old fashion polystyrene and seal it in think plastic sheeting.. (protect from oil and fuel)

put it in segments under the floor, with a big chunk up the front in the nose and another under the pod up the back..

that'll do it for me,, it might not be enough, but it will slow the sinking down :)

rgds

Frank

Re: Replacing Transom

Sapp, How did you tear out the deck? did you just start hacking away ? What did you use? tools? material? I might need this information if one day I need to do my deck . I am already preparing to do transom. I also put the boat on the web site. www.picturetrail.com/79gradywhite I hope I dont have to. but I feel that I might.

And how did you get started on your transom? did you remove the top piece and start drilling? I'm new at this, can u educate. thanks. And I was considering using seacast to pour into the top of that transom and toughening it out. do you think that would work?
