OK I've read all the posts I could find and the service manual. I need to replace the trim sender but I'm nervous about removing the gimbal ring becasue of the bellows. Can I just remove the gimbal hinge pins without removing the bellows and get access to the wires?

Just pull the old wires out far enough to splice the new one on. Be sure to use shrink tubing to keep them water (corrosion) proof. Stuff the wires back to where they will not be in the way or chafe.

Ditto, that's what I did to repair corroded wires, sender was good. Still works !

housing and main bellows need to be removed first. some people do the cut&splice method but a leaky splice encourges corrosion issues. The correct way is to replace it as a unit, wires and all..The trim sender puts you more at risk, because 12v is present while the key is in the "on" position.
