Re: Replacing ujoint bellows?

Having done my bellows on a later drive a couple of weeks ago, i cant think of any way of doing it without removing the drive, remember a propshaft runs from the engine to the sterndrive unit, so it has to be split.

No, Take off the rear cover there are 2 allen head screws in there and 2 nuts on the outside, unhook the shift linkage. Lift it up (having loosened the bellows clamps and bellows. and turn 90* either way and pull out. DONT lose the shims they all must go back New O-rings are recommended too.

Re: Replacing ujoint bellows?

Just take off the upper gear assembly.

Like this

http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser-i-o-inboard-engines-outdrives/outdrive-side-pin-removal-309095.html

Like mentioned, new orings and check the drive shaft for play, there should be none. Check the ujoints for damage and/or corrosion.

I would replace the water intake fitting and gasket under the ujoint bellows once the upper is off. That fitting and gasket can leak air into the cooling system if damaged.

I cant figure out how to get the pin out on the helmet to lift the helmet up and out of the way.It says to remove helmet bolts and pin.Is the pin threaded in or should it just pull out?

Re: Replacing ujoint bellows?

there are a couple different pins. If you have the type with two bolts vertically and two holes horizontally, First remove the two bolts, then you need a couple 1/4 bolts to thread into the horizontal holes. they are threaded and will allow the bolts to jack the pin up and out of the hole. If that is not the style pin you have, post a pic or post a description.

From the top looking down there are the two bolt holes(the larger bolts that I removed), and also two smaller holes that have no bolts in them.I assume these are the holes I need to tread 1/4 inch bolts into to jack the pin out,is that correct?

I got the pin out, thanks. Now I cant get the upper housing unit off.It doesn't want to break free.I removed the two allen bolts, two nuts, and the linkage. Is there a trick or is it just stuck on real good?I dont want to break it by prying to hard.

I have a AQ125a/270 combo too. I just did this a last week. Use a rubber mallot. Shouldn't take much. It's all precision fit. I changed the PDS bearing and seals, U joints, bellow and changed the oil. It all took a few nights after work but very do-able. Just make sure you have a manual.

Volvo started out as a tractor company so when working on the early one don't over think it! A block of wood and a BFH or BRH.

Re: Replacing ujoint bellows?

Lynall (and other inerested parties), the earlier "white" Swedish drives are completely different than the later SX drives, and thus not anything like Mercs either. The white ones are more heavily built, the transom hole is larger than Merc or SX and have lineage back to the late 1950's I believe. They have model designations like 250/270/275/280/290 thru the 1980's then SPA/B/C and DPA/B/C thru until later 90's (generalized statements to some degree). The 280, 290 could also be duoprop (280DP,290DP). The DP designated drives are all Duoprop.

^ +1

"White"? rattle can Duplex ford truck light grey matches pretty good.

The SX drive is descended from the OMC Cobra drive if I remember my VP lineage.

Re: Replacing ujoint bellows?

The SX did sprout from the joint venture years when OMC and Volvo Penta were collaborating. First SX-ish looking drive was from OMC known as the Cobra, then Cobra SX with Volvo, then just SX (ok ok, DPM, etc. came after that also). The Cobras still had the raw water pump out on the drive at the top, pretty easy impeller change but an OMC design. The Volvo Penta design went with engine driven raw water pump, that is one artifact of the cutover to Volvo when OMC had to go under. Early SX could still have a Ford based engine setup, gets tricky from 1994 thru 1998/99. This is a very general history, many nuances once a person digs in, drives mechanics right up the wall I bet.
