Hi. I'm the proud new owner of a 1974 SeaRay with a 165 HP Mercruiser. It's in very nice condition and was well maintained by the P.O. but I'm sure it's due for a new water pump and at least a lubrication of the U-joints. I've got all the service manuals now and I've read the sticky so I think I have some idea what I need but I'd also like some input from people who've done this job. I know I need a water pump kit and some special u-joint grease but what else? Any special tools needed? Should I replace the bellows while I'm at it? They look OK but I'm sure it's been a long time, if ever that they've been replaced. Anything else? Thanks.

Sounds like you about covered it. I would wait until you pull it apart for the water pump kit. Could be all you need is an impeller, could be you need the whole kit. Depends on po's maintenance. Check the joints for side play. Any play and they are junk. Look for water in the bellows and outdrive lube. Change the lube with merc hi performance. If they look like it's been awhile, replace them. Also do the gimble bearing and lower shift cable if your going in that far. Any good bearing grease will work for the ujoints and gimble. I prefer marine grade. You are gonna need an alignment tool. Take your time and do it right...you'll be happy you did...
