My son and I are trying to replace the water pump on our boat motor. We have the owner's manual and a Seloc manual, but we can not figure out how to disconnect the shift. Actually, we have not found what we need to disconnect. He has taken off the carb cover and the starting motor.

My son (19) had some experience working with his Dad on this motor and I helped with a few things, but neither of us helped with this project. His Dad passed away a year ago and we are trying to get the boat ready to go to the river for the weekend.

Any help would be most appreciated.

You'll need to remove the screw/pin from the clevis that goes through the hole in the top of the shift rod. Located just under the bottom carb, you will have to use a 1/4" drive socket, probably with a swivel adapter. On my 83, I go at it from the port side of the engine. You should be able to do it without removing the carbs. You can shift the mechanism so that you have better access to the screw head. You've got a VRO pump which may make the access somewhat more difficult.
