Johnson 35hp, model# 35el76s, jumps in and out of forward at speeds above idle. From what I have read in past posts, sounds like the clutch dog and gears needs replacing. My question is how hard of a job is this for the average do it yourself mechanic? I have had lower units off for water pump replacement before, but never had one apart. Any special tools required, etc.? Also, what kind of $$$ am I looking at here? Thanks, Nick

hello
about the only special tools you will need is the propshaft bearing carrier puller. most the rest can be made. if you get that far post back and we can tell you how to pull and install the shift shaft bushing. you will also need a medium to large set of true arc internal snap ring pliers. the 8" version from proto will work.
the dog and gear get rather expensive. its been a few years since I bought one for a little motor but last one I did was about 250 in parts.

if you replace the clutch, replace the gear also. this is one gear you can get as a single piece. Most come as a fwd/pinion set. also replace the spring and the two balls inside the clutch. You shouldn't have more than $225 in the parts.

Well, I'm on a roll here! Go see your friendly OMC/BRP dealer and ask to see the old service bulletin referencing to "severe duty" or three dog gear/shifter kits!! Orginal gears and shifters were two dog style, which is still OK but the three dog ones are, by far, better!
