I am about to replace the tilt/trim motor from a recently acquired Yamaha 85ATL 1993 and may need a quick help as the Service Manual did not reach my house yet. (Only have the Suzy and Johnson in my humble library, so far). I bought the 85ATL together with a new trim motor, so that a professional evaluated it to be faulty before (picture attached).

Is it a big deal to replace the tilt / trim motor or is it something an average human can do ?
Does it require any special tool ?

I can?t wait to remove it and would like take quick action if high mileage guys over iBoats consider it to be a complex task.

Any input will be really appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Re: Replacing Yamaha 85A tilt trim motor

Sometimes I feel really lonely here in Sweden...my Yamaha 85A still hanging in my truck and no one to help me to take the 118Kg out.
That is why I like boating here in the Scandinavia: I can be lonely the way I like in the archipelago.

But when it comes to iBoats, I have had great help so far. I hope someone is coming to hook me up:
Rodbolt where are you?
QC are you in Hasavu?!
Don S are you out with the Islander?!

Should I start removing the bolts? Do I need special tools ?

Thanks for any input.

P.S. Paid the Service Manual which should reach Scandinavia within a week or so, initial help in this meanwhile would be really appreciated!

Re: Replacing Yamaha 85A tilt trim motor

I have replaced the motor and internal foam filter on my 1999 C40 TLRX and it was straight forward easy job. Just raised motor and locked in place, removed the to pin on the tilt to swing the assembly out away from the back of the boat a little to get to the back screw, removed the 3 screws holding motor on, and took it off.
Cleaned everything up because the foam filter fell apart when I tried to remove it, installed new filter and motor with o ring and it worked fine. Not sure what to say about your 85, but I did not need special tools

Thanks yam40! Specially good to know you did not need to remove engine from the boat.
