New boat owner her so go easy on me. I was told by the dealer that I should replace the zincs on my Mercruiser I/O. The boat I just bought is a 2003 Bayliner with a 3.0L Mercruiser that has 125 fresh water hours on it. I am no metalurigical engineer but they look pretty good to me. What should I look for and do I really need to worry about replacing them for next season? The boat is in storage right now so if they do need to be replaced I would have to do it in the Spring of 2010.

Those zinc anodes and plate are sacrificial, meaning they are supposed to deteriorate instead of your hardware. My opinion is, if they're still more than 75% in tact, then they should be alright. On the other hand, they're not that expensive.

Re: Replacing Zincs

Did your dealer say the anodes need replaced because of type of material or the are more the 50% consumed. Boats are shipped from the factory set up for salt water and fresh water boats should the anode should be changed.

If the boat is a trailer boat and not left in the water, then the magnesium anodes will work.

Unless there is a difference in the anodes from fresh water and salt water that I do not know about, I would say that is they look good, they should be fine. They ae not expensive, and you can do it yourself. I think he may have been trying to get an upsell...
