Hello, I am asking for help in finding a correct replacement powerhead for a 1977 7.5 hp Mercury Outboard Motor, serial number 4854167.
I am trying to locate a replacement which will allow the transfer of the electronic and electrical components. I have found several listed in ebay listings however they are listed as 7.5-9.8 as though they are the same, of these none are listed for a 1977 7.5 hp with electric start and an electrical charging circuit system. Does anyone know if these are the same and possibly the year span of which I can select, ( for example 1976 through 1979 ) ? I recently replaced these components and they are new and I would like to retain them and avoid having to purchase them again.
The reason I need a replacement is that when I replaced the water pump and made an observation check to look over the engine ,I noticed a trickle leak comming from around the ecectric starter bolt boss casting. I am assumind the powerhead has corroded from the inside as there are no visual cracks, I am unaware of a remedy for this other than possibly welding it but in the past I've had trouble with welding cast as it tends to crack again from the heat alone unless preheated and then properly cooled.
