Looking at buying a used 2008 Merc 150 EFI to repower my 1992 Bayliner Trophy 2002 Walk Around

Anyone have any goods - bads with this motor? It has manf. warranty till 2015 which is a plus.

Currently have the stock 1992 Force 150 so I'm guessing I will see a big performance upgrade.

Re: Repower - 2008 Mercury 150 EFI

I have been told by many here and on other sites that the Merc 150 EFIs are probably the most bullet-proof engines Merc has ever made. I have a 1993 Merc 150 XRi (saltwater version) and can say that apart from non-internal engine stuff ( wiring issue, water pump issue that was a result of a sand encounter) my engine has been flawless. While it's not much better on fuel than a carbed version, it starts instantly when cold, starts instantly when hot, I don't have to worry about flooding the thing, never have to worry about carb rebuilds or cleaner, yada, yada, yada. I ran Johnson engines for a long time before I got this boat and this engine and was concerned about the "black anchor" on the back. However, that comment came from many Johnson/Evinrude owners and I have to say that this "anchor" has been great. The 2.5l block used on these engines is like the Chevy 350- a beast that will handle abuse and keep coming back for more. (I think they like being abused. LOL) Buy it, rig it properly, prop it properly and love it.
