Hi,
I do not know if Evinrude E-tech larger outboards has been released yet but they have a 200 hp E-tech that weights 516 lbs (234 kg). Also available in "Saltwater edition". To heavy?
Unproved and such that will be slightly negative. But You maybe should check that alternative so You do not miss an outboard that perhaps will suit Your needs (hp/weight/price?/etc).

It is also the E-tech 200 H.O. that is even more powerful (and a few lbs lighter).

Yamaha has also the 175 2.6L V MAX HPDI that might be of interest, 468 lbs (213 kg). Or Yamaha 200 3.1L V MAX OX66, 509 lbs (231 kg).

/Bo

Repower Options

I have a 89 Grady White Trophy Pro 9-6 beam with original 200 johnson motors. Its time for me to repower but I need some imput from you guys. I called grady white and they said the new 200 hpdi of any mfg will be to heavy and have the boat sit to low in the water. The original motors weight about 460 each after so thats what I base my motor choice on. As it is now my 200s outdrives are about 6 inches below waterline and I want to prevent this. The boat is solid and I like it so if I can repower for around 28,000.00 I'm good for another 10 years plus. After much reserch it has come down to either 15o yamy 4stokes or the 175 merc optis but i also could go with 200 merc efi's. The price on all three setups is the same give or take. I like the yam's but the real question is can they push the boat without killing them.Note I want to stay away from the 175 Johnson's for fuel reasons.
Thanks for your input.

Re: Repower Options

What is the max HP rating for the hull? It should be on a plate somewhere.

What do you mean by your outdrives are 6" below the waterline? The cavitation plates should be at or slightly above the bottom of the hull as a starting point.

Re: Repower Options

Outdrives still in salt water about 6 inches when tilted up. Max horsepower is 4oo but again back then no hpdi or 4 strokes had not been available. These motors in the 200hp range are an added 100 plus pounds on the back. Anyway does anyone run a pair of 150 four strokes on any year 25ft 9'6 beam grady.
Thanks

Hmmmmm!

You have 400 HP at your disposal now. Is 280 HP (twin 140's) to 300 (twin 150's, or single 300) going to fit your needs? That's 100 less HP! That's allot.

Weight is obviously an issue. What can you do to move weight forward and relieve your static (drives up) situation? Batteries, fuel, gear, etc.

You might be able to afford a few more pounds aft if you can move other weight forward.

Re: Repower Options

We've added jackplates to brackets to overcome the unit-to-water clearance issues. Or used the Porta bracket which is hydraulic itself. That REALLY gets the motors out of the water.

Re: Repower Options

The E-Techs are on the market. I have e-mailed a guy in Chicago area who has one on his 22 ft alum boat and thinks it is great. I think you could get a twin set-up for about 28-30 k installed, maybe a little cheaper. I would think weight wise they would be ok. A 200 would weigh in around 525, a little bit heavier. Maybe add a bracket that would give you more bouyancy. I know the guys are doing that with other boats. Grady make a great boat. Did they offer any suggestions?

Re: Repower Options

The Yamaha 200 HPDI (25" shaft) weigh 466lbs, they will burn 50% less fuel and oil than your current Erudes. I have the same issues weight issues with my boat and did lots of home work.

Re: Repower Options

2 standard DFI Erudes in 175HP are 427lbs each, and would likely perform better than your 200's you have now, on less fuel.

What are the "fuel reasons" for staying away from the Johnson 175's?????
Am I missing something?
