I have a 2004 Trophy 2359 with a 5L Merc I/O with a Bravo 3 outdrive. Engine code OWO18920

I have access to a nearly new Volvo 300 V8 (see pic below) engine and outdrive for a very very very reasonable price, but I have no idea if this is an exact fit that can be straight swapped... or if it's a huge undertaking that requires massive amounts of customization. I've got a mechanic here in town (Ketchikan AK) who was able to take the Merc/Bravo 3 system out (engine and outdrive) and put it back in, in a matter of a few hours.

Both have powersteering and closed cooling systems (heat exchangers) but I literally have no idea if the Volvo will even fit in the engine compartment, if the mounts line up, or anythign else.

Anybody have any knowledge or had any experience with this???

one, you have no picture

second, strip it down to the stock block and heads and build it up as a mercruiser to make your life easy. both started life as a GM SBC.

third, leaving the new motor a full VP bobtail is where you have a crap-ton of customization.

or, simply buy a new GM long-block, get new manifolds and be off and running for much less than the VP bobtail.

Transom assembly is completely different.

The cutout in the transom is not the same shape or size, so you'll need an adapter plate and possibly need to cut/modify the fiberglass in the transom.
Steering cables are different, throttle controls are different, so you'll be replacing controls.

What is a Volvo 300 V8? What year? If you're talking about this thing: https://www.volvopenta.com/marinele...drive-gasoline/v8-300-ce-sx/v8-300-ce-sx.html then that is a 5.3 new gen chevy engine, so the mounts are completely different as well.

How about posting pictures of the Volvo package? If both engines have carburetors then it would not be too complicated. As Scott suggested just swap the bare engines using the Mercruiser parts. The Volvo extra parts could be sold off later.
BTW, I understand that according to a drinking establishment I once visited, there is a sign that proclaims, “Ketchikan, A Drinking Island with a Fishing Problem”.

You don't say what V8-300 you might get. They made a few versions. And because of the different heat exchangers, it might matter.

Most likely it will fit. You will need everything from the front pulley to the prop.
Transom cutout is the same.
