We have a 1987 18' Sea Ray CC with a 170 hp Mercruiser. Second owner, we're in our third season, freshwater only, we trailer it.Recently, blew a hole in one of the pistons. Boat looks beautiful otherwise inside and out, had full bellows job last year, pulled and refinished all the teak, interior is immaculate. Looking to replace engine with a remanufactured one, same size etc. Looking for recommendations on reman "brands"--currently looking at Jaspar. Experiences with this company? Any others out there? Levels of quality? What should I watch out for? This is a big chunk of change-looking at about $2200 for the block and probably another 2-3 grand for labor-I'm hoping that by making this decision,I'm buying quite a few more years with this boat.(opinions on this?)Can't abandon it or else will lose what we've invested in it so far,and can't afford to spend more $ on another boat.

i cant recomend and engine company but wanted to say that it is inportant that you put on a new exaust system manifolds, risers, ect this will protect the investement you are makeing in the new motor and give it a good long life

tommays

Re: Repower suggestions

I would try to get as local as possible to purchase a reman'd block. This will give you the ability to re-contact (choke if needed) people who sold you the block.

A "factory" new 170 block is $2900 on the net. I would also have your properly evaluated for rebuild. You may be closer to repair than you think.

Find out what caused the hole?

Bob

Re: Repower suggestions

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I've thought about just replacing the piston as the most economical route. One cylinder head is pulled, so inspection of the visible portions of the cylinder walls, and measurements of them to see what condition they're in, would tell me if they're all pretty worn or are they OK. Compression was good in all but the one, which is a good sign.
As for how the hole got there, I have a couple of suspicions. There were a couple of events recently--one was catching a plastic jug in the propeller, causing it to jam up a bit. After removing it, it had a hard time running at idle that afternoon when pulling up to the dock. The next week,we hit a sand bar, stalling the engine. The week after that, I was cruising at about 3/4 speed when all of a sudden it ran rough. Made it back OK but it wouldn't idle well.
