Repowering different boat...

Right now I've got a 1990 60HP Motor being fully rebuilt. I really love the motor, pretty simple to work on and ran great until it wore out and cracked a piston. Very economical for a two stroke, and parts seem to be readily available for it. Not to mention I just painted it and put all new decals on it and purchased a new top mount control for it.

My dilemma is this....I would really like to take this motor and put it on another boat that is a little wider than mine and maybe a bit more fishing inspired for my liking. I do a lot of inshore fishing, freshwater fishing, and offshore fishing (when the seas are 2 ft or less). My question I guess is this...how big of a boat is to big to throw my 60HP on? I really could care less about speed as I feel you can only go so fast on the water.

I currently have my 60HP on a 15ft center console boat that is pretty light, but its only 5 ft wide!! It pushes this boat amazing. As a matter of fact, I would probably say its too much power for the boat, and if the user were not careful all the time could probably do a lot of harm to himself or others.

Im really hoping there is some sort of make/model of a 16' boat that is maybe 6 or 7 feet wide that is fishing inspired that my 60HP might be able to push pretty nice. Any input, or ideas/thoughts of any makes/models for me to look for?

Here is what I have now...I really like the style of the boat...definitely center console, but I just need more width/stability and more storage and a livewell. I also like my gunnel height as well.

You can see here how there isn't a whole lot of room side to side...makes it tough to move around.

i would look at some of the Aluminum Center consoles, you can push a lot more boat with aluminum. the main thing with aluminum, and salt water is anodes, to cut down electrolysis, and keeping it washed down.

Aren't aluminum boats more of a rough ride too tho? I usually boat in some pretty sloppy chop, and surprisingly enough the boat I have now actually takes it very well..but it has a little V up front there slicing through it some. Im not very familiar with aluminum boats at all. I have been on one aluminum boat, it was a newer triton, but it was a flat bottom boat with no V and would never go outside of a bay or the flats. That boat gave me a hurt back just going through light chop.

I suspect that the biggest boat that you will be able to get will be under 17 foot. I tried to use a 60 hp Evinrude on a Sea Pro 180CC that is actually 17'4" and it is a little small for that boat. It would push it up to about 28mph on flat water, but is underpowered. Wellcraft used to make a 160CCF that used 50-70 hp motors. It was a pretty well balanced package, but not really much bigger than the boat you currently have. I have seen some Old Sportcraft boats in the 16 foot range that used 60's and had a little more room, but they are no longer made. If you could find a boat simular to one of those you might end up with a combo that you like.

The 60 should work nicely on a 16'er.

So a 16' boat thats a bit wider with a livewell and front casting platform and more storage is what I need. I'm probably asking for an awful lot ;)

Hopefully I can find something. I also want to mount a trolling motor to the front of my next boat. I guess this biggest problem is finding a boat that can go offshore safely on calmer days/light chop/2 ft or less days.

Let me know if you guys know some makes and models that I could search for..

I wouldnt even mind another little project boat to makeover...I had a blast with this last one.

I've never been a fan of the styles of boats they've had. I know many love them, and they usually hold there value well...I'll look around to see if I can find one that has a nice V up front and see if its both worthy of going offshore and into the backcountry.

Thanks for the input tashasdaddy
