I have a 88 21' Answer CC. I dont know the exact weight but Im pretty sure its up past the 2000 since its old and this boats where made thick. Its and old Florida Marine Patrol boat. Anyways it now has a 93 225 johnson and it a gas guzzler. If anybody is fanilliar with miami i took it out to foley rock, out from goverment cut and back and wasted 20-22 gals. of gas. I currently get 45 mph with 3 people, 2 sets of diving equip. 40 gals. of gas and probally 150-200 pounds in misc. stuff. My question is what do you guys recommend 150-200-225 2 or 4 stroke. With the way gas is I would like to improve on my fuel economy and not really sacifice my performance. I dont think 20 gals. for a 15 mile round trip at 3000-4000 rpms is good.

1988 ANSWER MARINE INC
ANSWER MARINE INC
Outboard Boats
DIVE MASTER 21

Length: 21'
Model Name/Description: DIVE MASTER 21
Boat Type: Outboard Boats
Hull Material: Fiberglass
Beam: 8'
Engine:
Net Weight: 1,750

I don't know if you have the Dive Master, but those are Nada's specs. on it. There are other models there, but I wasn't sure which one you had. Of course, that's without Fuel, Motor, people and gear. So add to that...I would say if you are happy with the performance now, I wouldn't downgrade on the HP. You may wind up disappointed. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use all of it...And definitely 4-stroke if you are looking for mileage...

nadaguides.com/Values/ValueModel.asp?User=540A25E59D2FF&DID=38874&Type=MR&GCode=MR&wSec=4&wPg=1105&Com=0078&Year=1988&Letter=A

Evinrude e-Tec will save you some weight and deliver 4-stroke fuel economy without the maintenance hassles.

Re: repowering question

As I loathe 4-strokes......In DFI's, Yamaha HPDI, Mercury Optimax or Evinrude E-Tec would all be a good choice.

Re: repowering question

are you serious?

you think spending $16,000 to save 1 mpg is money well spent?

why not inspect your current setup. you have a 21 foot offshore fishing boat, its not a toyota prius. its not gonna get "good" gas milage,

check and inspect your setup befoe spending nearly 20 grand so you can get better gas milage.

thats just not wise!

Re: repowering question

has this consuption just come up or has it been this way forever. how long have you owned the boat. if it is a new problem, could you be hold excess weight, as water in the foam.

Re: repowering question

Ive owned the boat for 4 years and i really didnt pay attention to the gas milage since gas want not expensive back then. Now I get 20 gallons for 60bucks and only got 40 miles out of it at around 3000-3500 rpms. The boat has been redone so no wet foam or wood. Is this normall for this size of boat with this power. 2MPG at 3000-3500rpms. The newer boats like a Angler 204fx 3718test weight with a yamaha 150 4-stroke will get 4.77 mpg at 3500rpms.

Re: repowering question

well for one thing, chap, dont drive your 2 stroke v6 at 3000-3500 rpms. thats the absolute worst section of the power band. usually at about 4200-4500 is the best. about 3/4 throttle.

that motor you have is an excellent motor.

instead of tossing it aside, why not check out your hull. is it straight and clean? do you have trim tabs or a jack plate? how is the motor running?

Re: repowering question

Myoutboard its not like havent look at my oppsion.
1. buy a new $30,000 boat make payment and pay insurance for the life of the loan probably 10 years.
2. buy a 1-2 year old motor for around 9-10000 bucks.
So since I dont have the money to spend each month for a new boat I was looking to repower and its not only the gas its also the reliability of a new motor. And as you see what I wrote its more like 2.5-3 MPG more.

Yes its straight and clean. No I dont have trim tabs thought about getting them. How would they help. The motor is running perfect 100psi in all cylinders and the carbs where rebuilt in 03.

I was thinking the same thing. The repower money can buy a lot of gas.

Re: repowering question

when buying used you never know the true condition of the motor. at least you know the condition of yours.
