I have a '73 1150 115 SN 3027266. I'm replacing 3 pistons but using the other 3 pistons and reringing them. The new pistons come with the 2 ring design, can you rering the 3 original pistons with 2 rings or does the rectangular design cause it to need 3? Since the new pistons only had 2 figured you might get away with only 2 on the old ones but it might be cause of the new design of the ring that it's possible. Just a thought..see what others had to say.

You can install only 2 rings if you want but its better to use all 3 as the 2 ringers are a tad thicker. When we raced em we only installed 2 rings on the piston to cut down drag, one in top land and one in bottom land of piston.

The rings on the three ring pistons are rectangular. I think using 3 ea is best. The two ring pistons have keystone-shaped rings. They are not interchangeable, however, you may mix and match the piston sets at will.
