Im in the process of doing the prop seals and driveshaft seals on a 1976 70hp lu, what seals the shifter shaft? Is it just the little o-ring i see in the exploded view, or is it the belows looking thing? Ive been thinkin about just leaving it alone but i would  if i found water still leaking in. So do i need just the o-ring or the belows to, and is it simple to do? Thanks

Simple , you just pry the o-ring out of that housing and slip in a new one !--------The boot is not an oil seal.

Thanks, do i need to remove the shift shaft, or will the housing and oring slide down the shaft and back on?

????----------Shift rod must be removed in order to remove / install the O-ring.-------If shift rod may be threaded into the lower unit. You need to make sure you count the turns needed to remove it so you can put it back in the same amount.

Got the old one out, ripped the new one trying to squeeze it in, there goes 8 bucks in shipping for a 90cent oring, dang.

Yes, when i was putting the new one in i couldnt quite get it to sit in the slot and it got twisted up in the bore, then i let my dad give it a try and boom, ripped the oring, o well to bad its such a wierd size.

Did you put any grease on it and use some small picks to seat it ?? When you finally get the oring installed, put some grease on the end of the shift rod threads and thread it through the housing until you see it come out the other side. You won't damage the oring that way.
