Respraying cowl on a budget?

Ive got a Johnson 8hp thats flaking badly just on the hood. I dont want to have to replace the decals as they are expensive where I am. However the spray can for my colour (Gunmetal silver I think) is only $12 a can.

Would I be able to just remove the paint around the decals, then tape to the very fine edges of the decals and spray with a can?

I realise it wouldnt be a pro job, not expecting that, but has to be better than the 50% paint look thats missing.

OK, we will allow it this time. . . . :D

Actually, that is how many folks 'freshen up' their engine appearance. Redoing the decals can get crazy expensive.

Don't save money on the masking tape though, as you will want a clean edge around the decals, etc.

I have had great success with Fusion paint and it is all in the prep. Take your time, sand smooth and spray the first coat lightly and let it dry fully then apply additional coats. I would shy away from the clear since many clear coat paints are hotter and may wrinkle your finish. The other advantage of no clear is touch up.

After each coat I would wet sand with 400 or even 600 wet paper. After your final coat you can sand with 1500 lightly and even throw on a coat of wax.

A product called prepsol will clean the surface of any gunk...ie tree sap fuel or oil...tape the decals compleatly over and with a razor trace the outlines of the decals..you will feel the raise in it...hit the entire lid with a fine steel wool to scuff the surface....blow it off with air from a compressor...hit it with a niceeven coat ofpaint....remeber this always when painting......One coat is one one coat no matter how thick it is...couple of nice even coats with light sanding in between amd a coat of wax..boom done peel tape off decals the following day you want the paint to begin to cure..that will take up to 10 days or so before it wont peel really easy...

Hold off on the wax for a month or three. Since you are using a spray bomb rather than catylized paint, let the paint cure & de-gas. Once wax goes on the solvent evaporation & hardening stops. Still I would wax it before using it.

If you sprayed it from a spray gun & used hardener then you could probably use it & wax it much sooner.

This was my bay fishing boat I used an electric sander and really didnt sand that long Surprisingly paint job is over a year old. I used two cans of Rustoleum total cost about $8.00
the cowl had 85hp decals on the front, sorry I didnt have a pic of them but I used blue painters tape, covered them, then cut around the decals with a razor knife Keep in mind this is an old 85hp Force and just my bay fishing boat.
I did the same on my 70hp Evinrude
Oh, I didnt use a primer. After about 2 days on both motors, I used some cheap spray on wax
Seems to be holding up after a year and I only fish salt water.
Hope this helps......some

I used rusto automotive enamel bombs on my 1978 Johnny, also got the repop decals. Primer any bare spots if doing the lower, 3 coats of enamel and waxed a month later. Looks like new,

If you want the decals, check ebay and/or go to your local print shop with a pic and they can make some fresh ones up for you on the spot, or even let you create something custom ;)

Looks Great! No wet sanding between coats?

I hate sanding and tack cloth but to make it look great you have to do it. I did light sanding just to smooth the base coats out.
