Greetings,
I pulled a 67 Merc 650 out of the junk yard and have it running. But not real well. I fixed the hole in the water jacket cover, put in a new impeller and seals and pressure tested the lower unit. I ran "sea foam" through the engine mixed in with the gas and gave it a heavy "Deep Creep" spray treatment through the carbs to de-carbon it a bit. The compression is 125 all 4 cyl. The plugs are new, I believe this is breakerless ignition? The motor seems slow to rev to high rpm. It builds up RPM slowly when you open the throttle even in neutral. I would not say it is bogging it just is not revving like I feel it should then it will pick up rpm to a normal range. Same thing in gear prop in the water
It just seems a bit rough at any RPM, but I would not say it is mis firing. It "jumps around" rpm wise at at idle. from my experience with 2 stroke motorcycles I would suspect a crankcase leak. I used propane and a hose to try to find a leak in the crankcase seam but could not detect one. Is there a better way to check for this? I do however believe I can feel a wee bit of side play if a grab hold of the fly wheel and attempt to deflect it sideways. It is a very small amount but it is there. Is it common for this bearing to fail in this manner? Can this be replaced with out splitting the case by just removing the flywheel?
I am just getting into outboards but I like old engines of any kind, and this one would look right on my 1958 runabout. I'd like to bring it to health if possible. Unlike a lot of dealerships I hear about, my local mercury guys have been pretty helpful so far but I do not want to wear out my welcome there.
I'd be grateful for any opinions!
Thanks.
