any reason not to use Turtle or other auto compounds instead of "marine" on an old hull to remove oxidation from gelcoat?

They'll work, but usually "marine" products are a little more aggressive because of the hardness of gelcoat compared to automotive paint.

I believe the general consensus here on the forum is you don't use auto products in a marine environment.
