I just "inherited" an old cadillac 16 ft and 2 evinrude 33 hp engines, 1 a hand start and the other an electric start. The 33's haven't run in years (dont know much history on them) so I'm looking for suggestions on my next step. Both turn over very hard with th plugs in, a lot easier w/o them, I gave each cylinder a shot of oil B4 turning them. I just found this forum so I'll be back asking alot more questions on my winter project.

Can you give us the model numbers, right now I'm drawing a blank on that boat, and engines.

The 33hp engines were the same basic design as the older late '50s 35hp engines. They were sold as 'economy' engines between '65 and '70. They didn't have a thermostat, so they're more like the '57 35hp. The Evinrudes were called 'Ski Twins'. With the model number, we can be more specific.

Get ahold of a compression tester and check the engines out with it. If they have good compression, they're probably worth fixing up. Parts are easy to get a hold of, and consumable parts are still being made. As far as outboard parts go, they're pretty cheap too.

Tell us what compression readings you get.
And welcome to Iboats!

Re: resurrecting 2 old evinrude 33 hp

The info I got today on the boat is that its an aluminum Lone Star knock-off of the old CC wooden run-about with the front cockpit. Now, on the motors the manual start mdl#RX-13B ser#J2595435, and the electric start mdl#33852 ser#E01305. The boat is only capable of one engine it came with one mounted and one extra. What I'm really curious about is it very difficult for an amateur like me to do the major work like rings and timing and such. If its too much I'll have the work done on the engines and do the easy stuff on the boat myself, I'm just looking for a winter project (I have a heated garage).

I had one of these 33's-even when they're running good, you won't like starting them with the rope. Definitely a two-hand brace-your-foot process. Sorry I can't give you much other info.

hello
ya picked some nice ones to learn on. they share many features found on modern outboards yet are very tolerent of mistakes. the lower units were problematic with seal leakage but very easy to reseal. install new points. if the coils are original or show sighns of cracking replace them as well. rebuild the carb and fuel pump. replace any hardened lines. and these old motors run well. do the compression test first. buy a service manual and spend a few evenings reading and understanding and you will have an enjoyable time.
