my motor is a 1982 50hp evinrude!! my question is i removed the bearing carrier and replaced seals and bearings already, but on beginning of assembly i noticed that the retaining ring the three bolts that go through carrier thread into, has an extra hole in it between the threaded bolt holes , this must be for oil to pass through to the carrier bearing or to bleed trapped air off when filling lower unit??the carrier is marked with an up arrow, so obviously the extra hole has to be in one of three positions either 12 o clock , 5 o clock, 7 o clock or it doesnt matter?????? seloc doesnt mention anything about this!!!! Can anyone tell me where this hole should be????? thanks

Re: retaining plate and bearing carrier alignment

According to the factory, it really doesn't matter but as a tradition, I always put the extra hole at the bottom for oil flow, as the air can always bleed off easily.

a couple of pieces of threaded rod inserted into the plate makes the bearing carrier alignment a lot easier.

The gasket sealing compound is OK for everything but the propshaft splines. Use a marine grease, Triple Guard is best, for the seal lips and the splines. Gasket sealer gets "crumbly" and the prop is tough to remove in saltwater, that's why marine grease is better.

With the plastic spacer under the prop nut, 10 ft. lbs. then the next cotter pin hole if needed.

I believe the retaining bolts are 100-120 in lbs., but don't have a book handy.

All I can find, is for your year motor, prop shaft bearing housing screws 60-84 inch lbs.

Drain hole at the bottom, as suggested.

Good-Luck,

KYHunter
