retracting transom straps on trailer

we saw a trailer with a set of retractable straps. anyone using these - they were very cool. they bolted on to the trailer and you just pulled them up to secure the transom.

The rear end of my trailer is dunked every time I launch. I wouldn't want the rolled up straps and mechanical workings of the strap retention to be subjected to that.

agree, i don't think the mechanism would last very long. even in fresh water,

Our Shoreland'r trailer came with them. Name says "Boat Buckle". Website, of course, is boatbuckle.com. I looked at the website and I think the model that's on our rig is the Boatbuckle G2. They also make one called the Boatbuckle G2 Stainless for saltwater.

Anyway, they're pretty cool and very easy to use. The website says you can get them at places like Gander Mountain, Overtons, West Marine, Cabelas, and others. They come with a 1-year warranty.

Had a set years ago on a bass boat, they didn't make a whole season and that was in fresh water. They kept getting jammed with seashell from the ramps and all sorts of debris. Not sure about what's available today. Maybe they've gotten better. The one's I had were on a Shoreland'r trailer back in about 1988.
I don't leave my boat tied down when in the yard, I take the straps off and out of the sun and weather so their in top shape when I need them. I cover the boat but the transom straps are mostly below the cover.

Boat Buckle Stainless Steel here.
No problem since I put them on 5 years ago.
Just pull them up and hook, I firm pull on the handle and it's secure.

Same experience as Spinner here. I have had G2's for going on 4 years in nothing but "big bad salt water" and I have no problems. They still look/function like new. I'd never go back...the speed at which I can secure my boat and not having to keep up with straps is great...

Standard equipment on Ranger boats. Mine have been trouble free.

I had a set on a boat that I have since sold. Had no problem is two years of freshwater use. Much quicker than straps and always there.

I also have a set that came as standard equipment on my shorelandr trailer. So far I love them. Beats not remembering where you put the straps when you need to leave. Like others have said just one pull up and a pull on the latch and they are thight.

Sounds like one of those tools we could use since the stuff we lug to and fro could fill the jeep!

I have a 'trailer kit' - so when we're off to the boat, we always have our keys, locks, straps, spare bulbs and spare set of lights in case of emergency. It would be nice to pear it all down - and since we are going to do a little maintainence on the trailer soon makes great timing. Only worry is the zebra muscles - but we'll see if it's a problem!
