Retrofitting a Tach? & Prop question?

Is it possible to easily fit a small electronic tach to a motor that never had one. Specifically a small 1981 Evinrude 6HP.

And

Is it possible to get props for this motor other than the standard stock prop. It only seems that they are only available for larger engines.

Tiny Tach is a small, easy to install tach. They simply use one of the spark plug wires as a sender. They are internal battery powered. Just Google or Yahoo search for Tiny tach.

Thanks Silvertip!

That is exactly what I was looking for. :D

I was afraid of that T-Daddy.

I was told by someone that races small outboards in Germany that they could get me race props, of all specs imaginable, but the cost were more than I paid total for the little motor. :(

I now have two small boats with totally different hull designs and one motor.

It would have been nice to have been able to change the prop according to the boat being used that day.

Well I found a source for the Tiny Tach in Germany. :D

Now the old problem raises it's ugly head.

The cost start at 80 Euros, or better said $126.

I thought the stronger Euro was supposed to make things from the States cheaper! Germany is one big ripoff.

In the States it is between $27 and $37.

I will just have to wait for the next trip home for one of these little jewels.

RE: the tiny tach: take a look at the cabelas website. They sell the tiny tach for $39 USD. Just for grins, I checked international shipping, and they will ship air for 45% of total price or minimum of $40 (from their website):

All other countries

* Surface shipping and handling is 25% of the total order amount or a minimum of $20.00.
Air delivery is 45% of the total order amount or a minimum of $40.00.

I've always had excellent service from Cabelas, and quick shipping, no questions return policy.

RE: the prop: I have no experience with your particular engine, but my small Mercury kicker (Merc 110, 9.8 hp) has two props commonly available, one designed for use as primary engine on small boat (light load, fast speed), one designed for use as trolling motor/ auxillary motor on large boat (heavy load, slow speed). You might find that commonly available props get you close enough for what you're trying to do. This website has some props, and you might as well check Cabelas while you're there.

Hey dajohnson53 thats an idea, I didn't even think about Cabelas. :D

I used to order from them all the time, but we moved and the catalogs stopped. I kind of forgot them for awhile. I went online a month or so ago and asked for catalogs at the new address. Five days latter they were ten catalogs in the box.

Even with the airfreight and import tax it is still cheaper than the German source. Not much, but every little bit helps.

I forgot to add the the German source also wanted shipping fees.

Props ...

It seems that here at 10hp and above I can find alternatives, but below that it is ether the stock prop, or as you said for auxiliary power for large sail boats. That is it.

.

I love Cabelas, but am so tired of the pile of catalogs they mail. I finally contacted them and told them to stop all. If it were just a couple of large ones per year I'd be happy, but they send me one huge master catalog, several very large ones, and a bunch of smaller ones each year. It's just too much, and I'm not really very green!

Re: Retrofitting a Tach? & Prop question?

I can understand you with the catalogs.

We also used to only get several large ones a year, and I would prefer that it was still so, but on the other hand it is one of the few things that land in my box in English, and the only thing I look forward to coming.

I would rather have ten printed catalogs for outdoor activities in the box, than the two thousand E-Mailed PDF “in-house” produced versions from the online companies that Spam us with every little change that happens at their company. Quality vs Quantity.

Either way, the ones that I don't want, all land in the same place, the trash, it is just the printed ones get to live several seconds longer. :D

Thanks again!
