Rev Limiter?

Greetings,

I have a 20 foot open bow runabout that I recently repowered with a 2002 Mercruiser MAG 350 MPI with only 80 hours and a Bravo I drive. The drive has a 1.5 to 1 ratio and a 23 pitch prop. The engine seems to run great at all times but at around 4400-4600 RPM's and 55 MPH it feels like it is hitting a rev limiter. The engine seems to methodically miss at this RPM range. I have replaced the fuel filter and tried an external tank with the same results. I have also recently replaced all of the spark plugs, the distributor cap and rotor and the same thing is still happening. The WOT for my engine is 4800-5200 so I am thinking that this may just be the rev limiter kicking in because maybe my tach is reading a bit too low. Does this scenario sound like the rev limiter simply kicking in? I have no experience with these EFI engines so I am not sure if something is broken or if this is just normal behavior.

Re: Rev Limiter?

Check fuel pressure at the fuel rail (injectors), compare readings at idle and again full load WOT. If pressure droops the pump may be aging and starting to fail to supply adequate fuel for full power at WOT RPM.

Re: Rev Limiter?

So, the behavior I described does not sound like the rev limiter?

Re: Rev Limiter?

Check your tach with either a good shop tach that you know is accurate, or hook up an EFI diagnostic tool that has RPM readings and compare to your helm tach.
It's been so long since I heard one hit the rev limiter, that I'm not sure what it sounds like. The ECM just drops injectors till the rpm is within specs, then turns them on again, and repeats as necessary.

Thanks Don. I will check it out with another tach. I have never expereinced a
mercruiser rev limiter but the cutting out is so methodical that it sure seems like something that is happening by design.

The rev limither is not a stand alone system. It's just a very small portion of the programming in the ECM.
Has this been going on since the boat was new, or something that just started?

The boat was repowered with this newer engine. The old motor was carbureted and I never experienced anygthing like this.
