I'm running the original 1982 power packs on my rebuilt '79/82 140, and I understand these are non-limited packs. I also understand the ones with limiters are set at 5800 rpm max. I read that the non-limited packs are preferable to the limited ones, but if max RPM for the crossflow V4 is 5500, why would I care about having packs with limiters? When you hit 5800 with the limited ones, how does it limit, does it cut the spark and re-engage at a lower RPM or does it just bump along at 5800? Might actually save the motor if you jumped out of the water at WOT.

Secondary question, and not that I'm interested in running it off the tach, what is the typical failure mode for over-revving the crossflow V4, and how do the screamers solve it?

Engine runs great and I'm not planning to mess with it anymore, just bored at the home office today.

If you wanted to modify the motor then the non limited power pack would be great, for other purposes it wouldn't be of much value.

People say you can spin them to 7,000 plus, but I don't imagine they last all that long doing it.

It will normally cut spark and miss to keep it below the max RPM
