reverse and it shuts off..

i have a 1985 Century 3000BR with a 350 merc. I/O..

i just replaced the motor got every thing fixed and put it in the water.. it runs great forward but i go to put it into reverse.. and nothing.. the motor shuts off ... now it doesn't happen every time.. just the majority of the time.. can any one help me with this problem.. i just spent some major money and i want to be able to use it for the rest of the season..

considering you had to remove the drive to replace the motor, I`d start by removing it and looking there first,
Other cause is a bad/corroeded/ damaged /mis-routed shift cable

Ayuh,....

The Lower Shift Cable is My 1st Guess......
