I have an 1984 Evinrude 150 ANCRS Anniversary Edition.It won't go into reverse in water.It only grinds.I recently removed the lower unit and replaced the water pump and the lower unit oil.It went into reverse very strong before this and I double checked my linkage and manually shifted it.Any ideas?

Re: Reverse failure

if it shifts manually you have to adjust the remote cable. you set the cable to the motor, not the motor to the cable. out the motor in neutral, the adjust shift cable, to the motor. if this does not solve the problem. the shift rod got turned while the lower was off, which changes the rod length.

Re: Reverse failure

Thanks for the quick reply.The cables are all adjusted properly so I think you are right about the shift rod being turned.When I was re-attaching the shift rod it was turned too far in one direction and I had to turn it to get it to line up with the linkage bolt.I may have turned it the wrong direction.

Re: Reverse failure

The shift rod is measured in neutral, from the mating surface of the gearcase to the center of the hole at the top of the shift rod, with the shift rod offset facing forward.

The length for the standard long shaft is 22-1/16" +/- 1/32";

The length for the Extra long shaft X models is 27-1/16" +/- 1/32".
