reverse is gone

Hi all,when I put gear shift in reverse, it makes a heck of a noise. Can anybody give me a rough estimate to get repaired. The motor is a 1984 mercury 150 black max. Thanks in advance.

"Heck of a noise" has to cost a ton, Woody.

Generally when I run into major LU problems I buy another used one. The old inline 6s I run are real cheap, (whole parts motors), and the V-6s are a few more dollars, but without specifics (as JB has asked for), if she needs a total R n' R another sound LU is usually far more reasonable option. My overpriced $.02 JR

Can you hear gears crunching when you shift into reverse? Any reason to suspect that you did strip the reverse?
