reverse lock disassembling 35 johnson

I need to disassemble a late 70's 35 reverse lock mechanism and
then reassemble it into an early 80's 35.

this seems like it might be easier (and safer) if I release the springs first. is this so? what kind of jig or tool should I use to get the springs unhooked?
