Dear All,

Further to a previous post some time ago, the reverse lock on this merc (S/No 5731713 - 1980/81 20HP) does not function.

My question is - how do I get at the part to repair it.

Basically, when you move the engine into reverse a cam rotates on the shift shaft in the exhaust housing and pulls down (I think!) on a lever which operates the reverse lock mechanism to clamp to engine to the swivel bracket so that the engine does not ride up when put into reverse.

The cam appears to be in place but has become disconnected from the thin metal rod which operates the reverse lock mechanism. I need to get at the cam and rod to see whether I can reconnect them or make a repair, however, I cannot see any way of getting at it without removing the lower leg or other major surgery which I do not want to do.

Is there a way to get at the cam without stripping the engine?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Stuart

Re: Reverse Lock on 20HP merc

The reverse lock cam can only be removed with L/U off, as it is installed on the shift shaft and pushes a bar connected to the horns. L/U removal is not considered "Major" as it should be done bi-annually to change the impeller. You most likely just need to replace the cam. I had some success by squirting some WD spray down the shaft to lubricate the cam.. as mine was jammed.
