The reverse lock valve is designed to hold the drive from trailing out in reverse, if it doesn't work properly it will not allow fluid movement going down or up and you will end up with blown hoses or a 400.00 cylinder exploding :(

thanks bond-o..... since i assume you have converted a few, how hard is it?

Re: reverse lock valve

Ayuh,... Buy the newer pump,+ interior oil lines,+ bolt it together...

The Hi-pressure line may, or may not be the same line...
The Low-pressure return lines are replaced....
The outdrive-side connections are done by removing the manifold on the Bottom of the transom housing, Outside the hull...

I did mine years ago with an ebay purchase...
And a bunch since thru donor boat refits...

Re: reverse lock valve

thats fairly straight foreward/simple for my 69 but my dads 70 has the trim indicator sender assembly that uses the plastic lines.. so im guessing i would have to do a custom job. finding lines to fit or adapt them.

looking through mercruiser parts site none of the exploded views of the pumps show a reverse lock but im assuming from 83 and up?? but there are 4 different pump options does it matter which one?
how do you tell if its a high pressure pump? just curious.

i can usually answer my own questions just by reading your posts without actually asking...been great reading i might add too!

Re: reverse lock valve

so is something wrong with your reverse lock valve?
looks to me like there's not much to it to replace. a o ring? maybe clean it up.
the oem s/m states how to test it and things to look for. appears some test can be made static. some ya need the mercruiser hydrolic pump test gage set.
follow the s/m, not the parts break down list.. ya got s/m #1, right? ;)

it acted up last season and i took it apart and cleaned it and got it working.. there really is nothing to them! basically a cam, 2 ball bearings,2 springs and a plunger. the springs seemed warn out, i had to stretch them a bit to make it work.
but i just put the motor back in got ready to pull it out to fire it on the muffs. told my son to raise the outdrive while i hooke up the blazer.........heard a very loud pop and said oh sh**... blew a trim cylinder apart!!!

for some reason it stuck again but i wasnt there to stay stop when it started to build pressure....

since i took the pump/lock valve and cylinders off my project boat to fix it i might just upgrade the 75 tinny when it comes time instead.

the wierd thing is after i got done, i took his back apart, just looked at it to see what was stuck (nothing) and put it back together, now it works again.

what are you taking apart. i don't see any springs in the parts blow up from the oem s/m for the rev. lock valve.

Ayuh,... When I did mine, I deleted ALL the extra Stuff,...
I don't use a trim gauge, nor trim limiter...
The reverse-lock is done inside the new pumps...

I use only the newest plastic tanked pumps...
