I have a 1981 75HP Evenrude with power trim and tilt when I put the motor in reverse while in the water without any resistance reverse works fine but if there is any resistance like backing the boat off the tralier then the moter will shake and bounce and acts like reverse gear is not staying engaged. I have checked the linkage etc and it is correct according to the manual.

Re: Reverse Problem

Have you had the lower unit off? If so, by chance could the shift rod have gotten turned out of height adjustment?

Can you actually here the gear case grind or is it just the motor shaking?

(Centering Shift Cable)
(J. Reeves)

When all is as it should be, the proper method to adjust the shift cable is to disconnect the cable from the engine. Move the shift linkage on the engine to find the center of the play in neutral, and when found, leave it centered.

Now, grab the end of the shift cable sleeve, push and pull it to find the center of the play there, and center that play.

Adjust the trunion on the threaded portion of the shift cable so that the centered play of the cable lines up with the centered play of the engine's shift linkage. Install and lock the shift cable with the retaining clamp in that position. That's it.

Re: Reverse Problem

Thanks to all of you for your advice, the lower unit has not been off and it's the moter that shakes , no grinding sound when in reverse or shifting into reverse.

I will double check the centering of the shift cable.

Re: Reverse Problem

Justintime may have hit it DB.....with the engine setting straight up and down, try and shake the engine. If the upper end shakes very easy, the upper mounts may be shot. But, do as Joe Reeves posted and cover all the bases.
