I have a 1984 Johnson model E60ELCRE and with motor out of water and running on hose it shifts into forward and reverse gears fine. Once I put boat in water it wont shift into reverse. It ran all day with no problems with forward gear, It did go into reverse once or twice but would jump back out after 5 to 10 seconds. I did have lower unit off to change water pump and checked the shift rod adjustment which checked good. Does this sound like a gear case problem or could there be a problem with the shift rod adjustment. Any advise.
