reverse problems

Hi I recently rebuilt a ford motor 4 cylinder and installed it in my 86 capri bayliner everything works great except for reverse. I am new to boats and the transmission responses, I have no problems with forward, or neutral, but when I try to use reverse it tries but just will not quite engage while in the water. I hooked it up to the muffs and it does engage while its out of the water. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. I tried adjusting the linkages but as I am unfamiliar with the layout it wasn't much help thanks

I apologize its an 88 not an 86

Let's start with who the manufacturer is. OMC, Merc, etc?

Being a 88 with a 4 cyl Ford, that should make it a 2.3 OMC with a Cobra drive. I don't know how to post links but it sounds like he needs the stuart-hastings cable adjustment instructions.

It does sound like you need to adjust your cable for your shift linkage.
