Reverse stalls engine?

I'm having a problem engaging reverse on a alpha 1. Forward is fine, mabey a little jolt when engaging. Raising the idle seemed to help, but once engine is warm it runs to high. Any Ideas?<br />Thanks for any input

you should'nt raise idle..its hard on outdrive when shifting...i would say your problem is either a shift cable adjustment or a still shift cable that is not allowing your shift interrupt to work properly (if the latter is true a new shift cable is in order)

Your lower shift cable is coming to an end of its life. Rather it's getting corroded and stiff or the inner cable is worn a groove, when they are hard to shift and the engine dies, it's time to replace the cable.<br />These things just don't suddenly go out of adjustment after years of working.

Yes, it is hard to shift and is not smooth at all. The boat sat for 5 years before I got it. so as far as working for years ....not this boat. I just rebuilt the motor it runs great. I may have damaged something during the rebuild because this wasnt happening the TWO times I had it out last year. Replacing it sounds like a plan.<br />Thanks for your help
