Reverse???

My LU goes into forward and neutral, but not reverse. Meaning when its connected to the shifter. In neutral the prop spins both ways, but rachets a little. In forward it rachets alot and wont turn the other direction. In reverse the prop spins both ways. Of course happened after impeller change. If it's just a little of alignment will it cause this to happen or is it something more?

cheers

Re: Reverse???

sounds like the shift shaft splines were not correctly lined up at reassembly. the splines will fit about 6 ways and only work one. if it worked ok when you dropped it and not at reinstall its not an adjustment its something was not right at reinstall. a year and horsepower would help a bit more though. some little mercs used a rod and pin and the rod could have been disturbed.

Re: Reverse???

In neutral, the prop should spin both ways, no ratcheting, thats correct. I am sure rodbolt is correct. Same thing was the problem on my LU when I bought my engine. The mechanic at my local dealer spent a lot of time ripping his hear off trying to solve the problem.

-M-

Re: Reverse???

They say to put it back together in Forward. I've always had better luck in Neutral. But you have to be careful. The gearcase likes to drop out of neutral into forward with enough disturbance. When the gearcase shiftshaft is in forward, there is a lot of play in the shaft. In neutral, it stays locked in that poistion.

In fwd it'll ratchet. In neutral, it should be silent. In reverse it should lock in both directions.

Re: Reverse???

yep
happens all the time.
usually with that merc place the lower in fwd and the shft lever in fwd and assemble. later mercs had a netrual detent on the shift cam. cant remember but I dont think yours does. if it does you can do both in netrural.
