i just put a 2001 johnson 250 on my boat and it runs great in foward but in reverse it seems to be poping in and out of gear . im thinking maybe the shift cable. I put all new controls and cables in too . does anyone know where i went wrong. I was also thinking mabybe it was the prop there seems to be a little play in that too. when i put it in rev it goes but like i said its almost like a clicking sound but with more throttle it seems fine thx

Could you expand on that? I'd doubt that the prop can have anything to do with it.

Are you saying that this problem started after new cables and controls, or did you change those out trying to fix this problem?

You need to verify that the shifter cable is adjusted properly. Disconnect it from the shift linkage, slide it off, and where the cable end rests with the shifter in neutral should match up to where the shift linkage is at while in neutral. If that checks out then verify the shift throw (I can't remember the proper throw length off the top of my head, it'll be in a shop manual.)

If all of that is in order then you're likely looking at taking apary your lower unit to inspect the clutch dog and gears.

Re: reverse

You said new controls. Did you put the control cable ends in the correct holes on the levers in the control box??

(Centering Shift Cable)
(J. Reeves)

When all is as it should be, the proper method to adjust the shift cable is to disconnect the cable from the engine. Move the shift linkage on the engine to find the center of the play in neutral, and when found, leave it centered.

Now, grab the end of the shift cable sleeve, push and pull it to find the center of the play there, and center that play.

Adjust the trunion on the threaded portion of the shift cable so that the centered play of the cable lines up with the centered play of the engine's shift linkage. Install and lock the shift cable with the retaining clamp in that position. That's it.

Re: reverse

ok this is what i did sorry im kinda a nube to this repair stuff but with the price of gas im learning quick . i put the motor on myself i bought new control cables and a used control box or throttle. I hooked the cables up front first then to the engine. it seemed fine well looked fine when i started it on land for the first time it would only go foward.so i played with the tension screws and thought i had it . but when i put it in the water not so good . when i pulled away from the dock in rev it was poping then i went foward it ran great all day . and when i came back to the dock the same thing . ive fooled with the tension since but still the same . do i have to disconect them from both ends to find the center of the cable sleeve. and start over .thx for any help

Do exactly as Joe advised, leaving the cable connected at your control box. Once you know for sure you've got it centered while in neutral you can then determine if you still have a problem or not (my guess is that this will fix it).
