Reversed Polarity, battery melted, warning sound. Ugh.

OK, I'll make this short and sweet. Johnson 2000 30HP, Bass Tracker. Reversed the polarity on my battery, the negative terminal melted, along with some wiring under the dash, and near the engine. Specifically the warning horn black wire that goes to ground, and a black and white wire that goes to the big red plug. The warning horn is going off at a steady beep without the engine running. It doesn't have the quick on off any more to let me know systems are OK. I know the engine isn't overheating because we aren't running it, and it isn't low oil. I obviously have a short somewhere. My gauges are not working as well. I mean, how much friggin damage did I do here? The engine runs fine, but there are melted wires like I said, the warning horn is still going off, and the gauges don't work. Is this something you guys can walk me through, or do I just take it to a marina. I know very little about boats and electrical, so I just wanted to see how major this was, and If i need a professional to physically fix! I hate not being able to fish right now, and this was a dumb mistake. I can't believe I hooked the cables up wrong. Not even a beer before I did it too. Damn.

Welcome aboard.

Sounds like you had a bad day. If fishing is very important then I'd take it to a shop.

You'll want to replace all burned wiring. A new wiring harness sounds like a good first step. Get all the wiring fixed first then tackle the failed components. Anything with a diode or polarity conscious is subject to being fried.

Good luck whichever way you decide to go.
