All you guys who are getting ready to tackle that old '50's - 60's Johnson, Evinrude, Gale, etc that you picked up at a yard sale this summer for a winter project:
Do nothing until you read Max Wawrzyniak's fantastic columns at:
http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/06/columns/max/articles.htm
Step-by-step instructions, pics, diagrams, and don't neglect the factory service bulletins and blow-ups often listed in the right-hand column.
I just transformed a '56 7 1/2 hp. AD-10 from an inert heap to a perfectly good outboard which runs like a Swiss watch. It's my first attempt at such a thing, and it was done solely by gathering info here and reading every word of Wawrzyniak's (say war-ZIN-e-ack) columns.
He's got a book out, too - "Cheap Outboards" - but I don't know if it's just a compilation of those columns or new material. Anyone know?
