$10,000 CASH REWARD
ONE DEAD, TWO LEFT TO DIE!
Late Friday evening, May 03, 2002, three Lampasas teenagers loaded up the family boat for a fishing trip to Lake Buchanan on the Colorado River in the Texas Hill Country. The teenagers loved to fish and had taken the boat to the lake on numerous occasions.

They launched their aluminum Bass Tracker boat at the Burnet County Park at the north end of Buchanan Dam around dark and headed to their favorite spot near the powerhouse of the dam. At about 11:30 p.m., one of the boys called his folks to say that they would be coming home in 30 minutes or so. Around midnight, they put all their fishing tackle in the storage compartments and secured all the other equipment for the short trip back to the boat launch. After donning their life jackets, they took their respective seats and pushed away from the dam.

Around 8:00 a.m. on May 04, 2002, Kelly, the 19-year-old female, was found by two fishermen, semi-conscious, drifting in the badly damaged Bass Tracker boat (see boat photo). She was still wearing her life jacket. The fishermen towed the boat to shore where Llano County EMS treated her and then transported her to the Llano Hospital.

Around 9:15 a.m., two other fishermen found Jim, the 17-year-old boat operator, drifting semi-conscious out in the lake. His life jacket managed to keep him afloat until he was rescued. He was taken to shore, where he was treated by Burnet County EMS and then transferred by ambulance to the Burnet Hospital.

Justin Roberts, the third young fisherman, an 18-year-old male, was located by another fishing boat at about 10:35 a.m. His body was recovered by game wardens and transported to shore. Justin loved to hunt and fish so much that he was going to attend Texas A&M University with hopes of becoming a Texas Game Warden. Roberts was scheduled to graduate from Lampasas High School in late May

The 17-foot Bass Tracker boat occupied by the three teenagers was hit almost head-on and was run completely over by an unidentified fiberglass sport or runabout type boat. The fiberglass boat was medium to dark blue, which was painted over bronze or copper metal flake (see photos of fiberglass samples). Damage to the blue painted fiberglass boat will most likely be to the bottom and keel area.

The operator of the fiberglass boat and passengers, if any, did not attempt to offer any type of aid or assistance to the three teenagers. They left one dead and two to die on Lake Buchanan that night.

If you have any information regarding this fiberglass boat or it's operator or passengers, call CRIME STOPPERS @ 915-388-4224 or 512-756-8477 or call TEXAS WILDLIFE CRIME-STOPPERS PROGRAM @ 1-800-792-GAME(4263).

Darn shame someone would do a deed like this and then run. Intentional or not they should have stayed and given assistance. This act in its self here is against the law let alone hit and run. When they get caught lets hope some one doesn't make a mistake and technically screw the case up.

Drowned Rat, the Colorado River flows through the Texas hill country and via several dams built in the early last century (part of the WPA during the great depression and later flood control), makes for several lakes, such as lake buchanan, LBJ, and a few others I'm not remembering at the moment. My grandparents living in the Marble Falls area first got electricity after WW2 directly as a result of the hydroelectric facility constructed at the Buchanan dam.
The system is truly a marvel, and although its in Texas, it is the Colorado River!
Pathetic story, however. Those who will not help another in dire distress are amongst the lowest forms of life, IMO. The murderers were likely intoxicated, and decided that avoiding an arrest was more important than killing innocent people. Disgusting....or whatever, there isn't a strong enough word for it.

So sad!!! Sad also, given the way the media works, the lowlife's will likely make boating look bad in media while the fisherman that rescued the 2 survivers will go mostly untalked about.

Are you talking about the Rio Grande river?? The Colorado is no where near Texas. The headwaters start near Grand Junction, CO. From there it flows SW into Utah, then through Grand Canyon in Arizona, and finally through Mexico to the Sea of Cortez. If it flowed through Texas, it would exit into the Gulf of Mexico, and it certainly doesn't do that. Wrong side of the Continental divide. Not that it matters, just curious what you're talking about.

This inferiates me beyond words... At least something appropriate for here. I wish I was within drivable distance to help locate the missing boat.

Drowned rat, on occasion names are used more than once. Heck I've been to two towns that had a "Main Street" ( just kidding ya here to illistrate a point).

the colorado river and the 6 dams built along the river make up the highland lakes. without a doubt the most beautiful area of texas....the texas hill country. the colorado continues, basically though downtown austin as town lake.

map?

The Colorado does in fact flow into the Gulf of Mexico it comes out in Matagorda Bay. I have friends that live on the river in Matagorda.

Re: REWARD - One Dead, Two Injured

We had an incident like that last summer, but no fatalities. A large yellow speedboat nailed a small sailboat and fled. It was never found. It is assumed that it was a trailered boat and that the person left. We get a lot of people from Washington and Montana who come here, wreak havock on the lake, and leave before the Sherriff can get them. The sailboat was hit in the early evening and left to founder. Thankfully other boats were able to assist.

In the recent past, there was a somewhat similar hit and run fatality on Lake LBJ, another of the Highland Lakes in the Central Texas Hill Country area.I believe the Texas Rangers, who were called to assist in the investigation, eventually arrested a very prime suspect. It won't be long before this recent case is solved as well!!!
The Rangers take no sh. t and will get the SOB that is responsible for this!!! Trust me on this one, folks.
