Rewind starter on Evinrude 4.5

The starter cord on my 1983 4.5hp evinrude does not retract back after each pull. Is this something I can easily replace and if so where can I get the parts?<br /><br />Thanks<br /><br />old salt

Old Salt....if the spring ain't broke..it may be just gummed up around the recoil spring. Try shooting some WD-40 in the spring area and working it some. Might help.<br /><br />If you need parts, they are still available from the local Johnny/Rude dealer.

Hi Old Salt,<br /> There's only about 8 parts in the whole recoil. First thing I'd look at is the spring - make sure the ends are attached to the housing and center spool. If you're not getting any retraction at all, it's possible one of these ends has broken and is no longer engaging. Be VERY careful when working around the coiled spring - safety goggles are a good idea.<br /> I like to preload the spring with about 2 turns before I bring the cord through the front of the motor - gives it enough tension to fully retract without putting too much twist to the spring. <br /> Should be lubricated with a light grease. Sometimes the old grease gets dried out and stiff - can be loosened up with light oil, WD-40, CRC, etc.<br />- Scott

I've had the end of the spring break off. I reground the end of the spring w/ a file & dremel tool. It's a fairly easy but messy job trying to hold everything in place to reassemble. (I probably used to much grease.)An OMC manual helps. I suggest replacing the pull cord while you have it apart. I've had to replace 2 cords over the years. A nice running little motor.
