Changing out my motor and drive and decided to put the wiring harness in out of the donor boat I raped so that I can just plug and play the motor when I get it in. Question I have is.... All the gauge wiring was pretty straight forward. What I am left with is a big red and a big orange wire. I am guessing the red goes to the key? And the orange goes to the volt gauge?? The wiring came out of an 86 Wellcraft and is going into a 79 Seacraft.

The red wire goes to the circuit breaker on the motor and I believe the orange goes to the alt +

Hi there, The orange wire should be joined together with the Red/Purple wire going to the battery side of the key switch with an inline fuse in place.

It can also be used as an accessory fuse panel not to exceed 5 amps.

In the link below, Start on page 4E-7 and be sure to read the notes.

The volt gauge uses the ignition power (Purple wire) unless you have an amp gauge? then it uses different color wires.

What engine model are you working on?

Ok thanks. It is an 86 5.7 motor. I tore the complete setup out of another boat. That is all I know. I assume by looking at the old control panel that the red wire is just a general acc power circuit? It's a decent size wire, 10 or 12 gauge.
