Hi, i am wondering if anyone has had thier boat trailer protected by a spray on like rhinoline or armourthane? I tow my boat on gravel roads alot and my trailer's paint is taking a beating. I have a sweeper on my truck but it still seems to shoot gravel at the trailer. Does anyone have any other recomendations? thanks

Re: Rhinoline on boat trailer

I had my trailer sprayed with Line-X when I redid it and its perfect. I have heard horror stories about how rust got beneath spray on bed liners and spread without the owners knowledge and had their trailers fall in half while driving down the road. Rhino liner does become porous after awhile and lets moisture in and it provides a perfect breeding ground for rust and corrosion. When I had mine sprayed I spent along time with prep work. I had to triple check and make sure my trailer was corrosion free. My trailer has been going strong for almost 4 years in and out of salt water 20 times a year and so far so good...

Related to your dilemma: Is it possible to use sacrificial zincs on trailers?

I have a galvanized trailer, but this thread made me wonder about the guys with painted trailers....

I think that the Rhino Liner or Linex would be ok. Just be sure it is well prepped, that it gets a good bond to not allow moisture underneath and that there are plenty of areas for the tubing to drain to free itself of unwanted water...

As for sacrificial zincs on trailers, they are not in the water long enough to matter. As to painted trailers, I never see them launghing into Salt Water...

This is a heck of an idea.

Worth the price of admission today.

Re: Rhinoline on boat trailer

On the way home from work i figured i would stop and talk to one of the armourthane shops here in town, and they seemed to think it would work great. They figure with some good prep work (sanding off rust spots and scratching up paint) the armourthane would adhere great and protect it nicely. Now we just have to figure if we can spray it with the boat on or if i will have to wait till next spring and launch the boat. The shop i talked to figured it would be $700-$800Can to do it. I figure that would be a great deal if i never have to worry about my trailer ever again.

Never having to worry about it and doing the normal maintance checks and inspecting it for damage are not the same.
You will still need to inspect it for bubbles and cracking just to be sure.
If there was an indestructable material then we would all own one made of it.

Aluminum. Not really indestructable, but definetly the best trailer material for boats, in my opinion...

I used some of this stuff:
http://www.noskid.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=40_44

You know, the stuff your likely standing on once a day or so.

Heavy textured vinyl tape, 3" wide, 60 feet long qith peel and stick adhesive made for your shower floor.

Shower floor so it is pretty water resistant.

Kinda thick vinyl so the rocks and sand do nothing to it as they bounce off.

Best thing is I did the underside of my trailer rails for less than $54

Well, I'm also a Line-X fan. Goes on hot and conforms to every nook and cranny. Looks very factory-like. Comes with a great warranty too. As has been said.... Prep, Prep, Prep.
