Rib adventure questions

Hi everyone. Recently i bought a 10 or 11 foot Caribe Rib. I've never owned one before and really just bought it because I wanted the 15hp 4 stroke Yamaha that it came with.

My plans were to put the outboard on a small Jon Boat I have, then sell the Caribe.

However, I was just drawn for a 4 day hunting/camping trip on Sapelo Island along the Georgia coastline. To get out there you need to either take the ferry (which greatly limits what you can bring) or bring your own boat. Of the 3 boats I own I would think the Caribe is most capable.

From the best I can tell it will be a 40 min boat ride, most of the trip is through fairly protected river/channel areas.

I guess my question is this... Would you load up 4 days worth of gear and head out to a nearshore island in early december with this boat/motor combo? Or should I just take the ferry?

Re: Rib adventure questions

On the Georgia coast also.

We run a 14 ft. fiberglass with a 60 inch beam for river fishing. When the wind blows, it is no joy in the short, steep waves on the river, and you sure do not want to mess around in the sounds. A 12 or 14 ft. Jon boat is even less sea worthy. A 10 or 11 ft. Caribe is a lot of boat for its size, but loading it up with equipment can be a challenge.

Do some trial runs and see how it feels in the waters you plan to traverse. I doubt anyone who has no experience in a boat like you mentioned in the particular waters you want to go out on can give you any realistic answer on what will happen.

That size is rather small for far away sea outings, if environment is good, flat calm waters, no wind could make the trip with caution, so not to depend on ferry schedules and gear to take along. Take life jackets, emergency equipment, VHF radio, and proper clothing.

Re: Rib adventure questions

i live in coastal GA and have a 12ft RIB. "short, steep waves on the river". haven't seen those but then again i wouldn't be out in a storm either. I'm in the Hilton Head area and wouldn't hesitate to take the RIB to Ossabaw Island. (its a bit south lol) but i'd navigate the back rivers as much as possible to get there, i.e.: wilmington etc. i agree equipment loading can be a bit of a challenge. i carry a hand held and a fixed vhf and chart plotter both mounted on the battery box. my two cents, take the caribe!
