just want to make sure I'm doing this right, I think it goes like this. when you turn the idle screw in you are richening the fuel air mixture and when you turn the idle screw out you are leaning the fuel air mixture, referring to how much fuel to air you have, so all the screw does is control the air? is this correct? No, you are adjusting the fuel not the air out is rich.

thanks, so on a 72 1150, the bottom carb screw will be out a little more than the middle? I think I went the wrong way

Idle setting must be done in the water in gear and the bottom carbs tend to be set leaner but that does not always hold true as float height and vacuum enter into the adjustment.
